Richmond grandmother scores 0K while buying gifts

Richmond woman wins $100K top prize with Virginia Lottery scratcher while holiday shopping

Richmond, VA – A trip to buy Christmas gifts turned into a six-figure payday for a Richmond woman who uncovered a $100,000 top prize after playing a Virginia Lottery scratcher at home.

Frances Webster had picked up a Bonus Spin Crossword ticket from Spencers Express on Centralia Road in North Chesterfield while out shopping for her grandchildren. After getting home, she scratched the ticket and realized she had hit the game’s highest possible payout — $100,000.

She now plans to use her winnings to pay off her car and settle outstanding bills. The Bonus Spin Crossword is one of many instant scratch games offered by the Virginia Lottery, with prizes ranging from $5 to $100,000. The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 1,224,000. This was the second top prize claimed in the game, leaving four still available.

Virginia Lottery proceeds go directly toward funding K-12 education. Webster’s home district, Richmond City, received over $22.5 million in Lottery contributions last fiscal year. Statewide, the Lottery generated more than $901 million for education, representing about 10 percent of Virginia’s total public school funding.
