Robbery suspect arrested after parking lot assault in Newark

Newark, DE – A man was taken into custody early Thursday after police said he assaulted and robbed a victim outside a business on South College Avenue.

The suspect confronted the victim in a parking lot before entering the building and returning to continue the encounter.

He was detained a short time later after officers located his vehicle leaving the area.

The incident occurred on November 7 at approximately 1:32 a.m. when police were called to the 1100 block of South College Avenue for a reported robbery.

Investigators learned the suspect, identified as Jordan Maness, had confronted a subject and stated he was going to retrieve a firearm.

Maness briefly left the immediate area, entered the business, and returned to where the victim was located.

Assault detailed by investigators

Police said Maness punched the victim multiple times and strangled him before forcibly taking personal items.

The victim declined medical treatment after the incident.

A description of Maness and his vehicle was broadcast to responding units as the investigation began.

Officers locate fleeing vehicle

A short time later, officers spotted the vehicle leaving the area and conducted a traffic stop.

Maness was taken into custody without incident and transported to Newark Police Headquarters.

He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court #2 and charged with robbery in the first degree and strangulation.

Maness received $70,000 cash bail and was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution.
