Wilmington resident’s jewelry recovered after alleged staff theft

WILMINGTON, DE — A Sunday morning theft at a Wilmington senior living facility led to the arrest of an employee after troopers determined jewelry had been taken from a resident’s apartment shortly after the resident stepped out, according to the Delaware State Police.

Troopers responded around 10:30 a.m. on February 15 to Forwood Estates at 1912 Marsh Road for a reported theft. The investigation found that the resident left their apartment at about 8:30 a.m. Moments later, an employee identified as 62-year-old Kem Mays allegedly entered the apartment without permission and stole jewelry belonging to the resident.

Troopers contacted Mays during the investigation and were able to recover the stolen items, which were returned to the victim.

Mays was taken into custody without incident and brought to Troop 1. He was charged with burglary second degree and theft under $1,500 where the victim is 62 years of age or older. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on a $12,000 unsecured bond.
