BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, NJ — An off-duty Toms River Township police officer was arrested after allegedly breaking into a home, assaulting two victims, damaging property, and resisting arrest late Friday night, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced Monday.
Rebecca Sayegh, 32, of Toms River, faces multiple charges including home invasion burglary, two counts of assault, two counts of criminal mischief, terroristic threats, and resisting arrest. Authorities said the violent incident unfolded on April 25, 2025, around 11:20 p.m. on Evernham Avenue.
Sayegh’s booking photo was not published by the Ocean County Jail, which is standard for most inmates in the facility.

Police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance and found that Sayegh had allegedly smashed the front glass door of a residence, entered the home, assaulted two people inside, and made terroristic threats. Investigators also determined that she damaged a vehicle parked in the driveway belonging to one of the victims.
Sayegh initially resisted efforts by officers to arrest her at the scene, officials said. She was first charged via summons, but the serious nature of the offenses led to her being re-charged by warrant on April 28.
Officer re-arrested and jailed pending detention hearing
Sayegh was taken into custody at her home by Berkeley Township Police and transported to the Ocean County Jail, where she remains lodged pending a detention hearing.
Prosecutor Billhimer praised the Berkeley Township Police Department for their work on the investigation but reminded the public that all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Officials have not released details regarding a possible motive for the alleged attack or whether Sayegh has been suspended or placed on administrative leave from the Toms River Police Department.
