Two charged in raids on Wacky Tobaccy smoke shops in Monmouth County

WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Two men were arrested Thursday following coordinated raids on Wacky Tobaccy retail stores in Wall Township and Asbury Park, where authorities say large quantities of illegal substances, cash, and untaxed goods were seized.

The investigation, launched by the Wall Township Police Department after receiving a tip through Monmouth County Crime Stoppers, included the Asbury Park Police Department, the FBI Safe Streets Task Force, and the New Jersey Treasury Department.

Ronald Slack, 38, of Beachwood, and Michael Attianese, 36, of Asbury Park, were arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including first-degree distribution of marijuana in amounts exceeding 25 pounds and third-degree distribution of hashish over 5 grams. Authorities also filed charges for possession and distribution of other substances and chemicals.

Additional evidence collected included raw cannabis, THC edibles, infused beverages, and drug paraphernalia. A vehicle belonging to Slack was impounded, and authorities seized cash believed to be tied to the operation. Lab testing of additional suspected controlled substances is underway, and more charges may follow.

Tax violations added to criminal charges

In addition to the drug-related charges, the New Jersey Treasury Department cited both locations for failing to pay taxes required under their licensing agreements. The establishments face municipal-level disorderly persons complaints under Title 54 and are required to pay restitution for the untaxed merchandise.

Both suspects were transported to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution after being charged on warrants.

Authorities emphasized the role of community tips in initiating the case. “This case highlights the vital role of community involvement in fighting crime,” the Wall Township Police Department said in a release.
