A White Marsh man who spent years doubting his lottery luck is celebrating a $50K Powerball prize after matching five winning numbers.
BALTIMORE, Md. — After years of playing without a major win, a White Marsh man who juggled multiple jobs finally found himself believing in lottery luck after claiming a $50K Powerball prize from the Maryland Lottery.
The Baltimore County resident and his wife claimed the prize Thursday at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
Using the nickname “Jack of All Trades,” the winner told lottery officials he has spent much of his life working two, three or even four jobs at a time.
He purchased the winning ticket for the May 20 Powerball drawing and matched four of the first five numbers plus the Powerball to win the game’s third-tier prize of $50,000.
Despite checking the numbers, the longtime player said he initially didn’t believe he had won.
“I’ve been playing for years and never hit anything big,” he told lottery officials.
The winner said he asked a store clerk to verify the ticket.
“He was more excited than me,” the player recalled, adding that he wasn’t convinced until the clerk printed the winning amount.
The couple spent more than a month reviewing the prize claim process before making an appointment to collect the winnings.
The winner said he remembered making deliveries years ago to the same Baltimore building that now houses Maryland Lottery headquarters, where he returned to claim his prize.
Although the windfall won’t allow him to retire immediately, he said it moves that goal a little closer.
For now, the couple plans to deposit the money into savings.
The winning ticket was purchased at the 7-Eleven located at 4139 East Joppa Road in Nottingham.
