Driver goes wrong way at high speed before ending up at grocery store
CHESAPEAKE, VA — A driver going the wrong way at high speed on the Chesapeake Expressway sparked a dangerous early-morning scare before being arrested in a grocery store parking lot, police said.
Authorities received multiple reports around 8:14 a.m. of a red Chevy Suburban traveling south in the northbound lanes of the expressway.
The vehicle sped across the 168 Bypass bridge over the Albemarle Canal, continuing in the wrong direction before suddenly making a U-turn near the Edinburgh area.
Police briefly lost sight of the SUV after it exited onto Hanbury Road.
Officers quickly canvassed the area and located the vehicle in the parking lot of a Harris Teeter, where the driver was taken into custody without further incident.
Police said the driver is facing charges including DUI, hit and run, and refusal to submit to a breath or blood test.
One hit-and-run crash was reported during the incident, though only minor vehicle damage occurred and no injuries were reported.
