Veteran lottery player wins big while out of town

WHEATON, Md. — A retired federal law enforcement officer from Olney is celebrating a $50,000 Bonus Match 5 win after a longtime lottery retailer called him with surprising news while he was out of town.

The Montgomery County resident, a regular lottery player since 1977, purchased his ticket at Elbe’s Beer and Wine, located at 2522 University Boulevard in Wheaton — a store he has frequented for over 40 years.

On July 7, one of his three quick-pick combinations matched all five numbers in the daily Bonus Match 5 drawing, earning him the game’s top prize.

The winner didn’t find out until later, when the retailer reached out directly to suggest he check his ticket. Upon returning home, he confirmed the win and shared the news with his wife, calling the moment “awesome” and “wonderful.”

He plans to use the prize money to take a Maryland-based vacation, possibly to Deep Creek Lake, pay off some bills, and bolster his savings.

Elbe’s Beer and Wine will also receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
