MOUNT LAUREL, NJ – Neighbors along the south branch of the Pennsauken Creek were seeing red this week, literally. That’s after a discharge from a nearby plant into the Evesham MUA water treatment system turned the waterway red.
The Evesham Township Municipal Utility Authority investigated and found that a local beverage manufacturer in a nearby industrial park improperly discharged red dye into the nearby wastewater treatment system.
That system dumped the red-colored water into the river. Officials said that in order for the dye to make it into the treatment facility, it had to be dumped down a drain or into the sewer system.
Authorities did not reveal the name of the offender, but Evesham is home to the Coca-Cola bottling company. It is not known at this time if that facility was the source of the leak.
MUA officials said the dye is not harmful to humans or animals.
