Toms River, NJ-

Since 2006, the iconic downtown Toms River clock hasn’t worked. It had remained stuck at 1:35 for nearly 16 years. This week, the clock, which was a donation by the Kiwanis Club of Greater Toms River as part of the 75th-anniversary celebration have the Toms River Kiwanis Club in 2001.

According to Mayor Maurice Hill, fixing the clock is just one of the little things the township is taking care of around town.

“We’re fixing the big things and the little things,” Mayor Hill said. “The little things matter, and they add up quickly.”

Kiwanis Club member Jack Mallon announced the project in 1998 and was the head of the committee to purchase the clock. The inspiration of the clock came from a similar clock that was located in downtown Lakewood.

The clock’s height was intentional as it is intended to limit exposure to vandalism and graffiti. The four-sided clock was unveiled to the public on July 26th, 2001 at 1 p.m. The base of the clock is adorned with bricks engraved with past presidents of the Kiwanis Club and businesses that supported the club and help raise money for the purchase.

The clock dance 12 ft tall and is located on the south side of Washington Street in front of town hall.
