WILMINGTON, DE – Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle collision that occurred in the early hours of yesterday, on I-95 near the Wilmington city limits.

The 25-year-old female driver from Wilmington was operating a Chevrolet Impala when she lost control of her vehicle, possibly due to excessive speed or mechanical failure. The vehicle veered off the road and struck a guardrail, which penetrated the driver’s side, causing significant damage.

Tragically, the driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s identification is pending notification to next of kin. A 28-year-old female passenger, also not wearing a seatbelt, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The extent of her injuries is currently unknown.

During the investigation and road clearance, authorities closed three right lanes of southbound I-95 for approximately five hours. Delaware State Police are urging anyone with information on this incident to contact Master Corporal J. Forester at 302-365-8485.
