NEW YORK, NY – NYPD detectives have officially classified a May 10 hit-and-run incident as a homicide. The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made thus far.
At approximately 11:17 p.m., officers from the Manhattan North Community Response Team attempted to stop a vehicle on Riverside Drive in Manhattan. Instead of complying, the driver fled the scene, leading the police on a pursuit. During the chase, the officers lost sight of the vehicle.
After conducting a thorough search, the police located the vehicle at the intersection of Drake Street and Randall Avenue within the 41st Precinct. The vehicle had collided with a parked and unoccupied tractor-trailer. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered two individuals inside the vehicle, a 29-year-old male and a 31-year-old male.
Both were conscious and alert but sustained injuries from the crash.
Emergency Medical Services arrived and transported the injured individuals to separate hospitals. The 29-year-old male was taken to New York Health and Hospitals/Lincoln in critical condition. Unfortunately, the 31-year-old male, identified as Jose Matos from Bronx, NY, was transported to New York Health and Hospitals/Jacobi in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
