RARITAN BOROUGH, N.J. – Janakiraman Somasundaram, a 41-year-old resident of Celina, Texas, has been arrested by Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office and Raritan Borough Police Department for sexual abuse of two minors in Raritan Borough.

On June 19, the Sex Crimes/Child Abuse Unit of the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office received a report from a family member of a 12-year-old girl, alleging sexual assault by an adult known to the family. After an interview, the girl reported being sexually assaulted by Somasundaram on three occasions when she was between 8 and 11 years old.

Five days later, on June 23, a second female victim, 15 years old, was identified. The girl reported two instances of sexual contact by Somasundaram while she was 15 years old in Raritan Borough.

An investigation by the Sex Crimes/Child Abuse Unit and the Raritan Borough Police Department led to charges against Somasundaram, including three counts of 2nd degree Sexual Assault by Sexual Contact, two counts of 3rd degree Endangering the Welfare of a Minor and one count of 4th degree Criminal Sexual Contact.

Detectives found that Somasundaram had moved to Texas. He was arrested at his home in Celina, Texas, on Wednesday, July 5, by members of the Celina Police Department assisting New Jersey detectives. Somasundaram agreed to extradition from Texas and was transported to Somerville, New Jersey on last Tuesday. He is currently held at the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing.
