NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Less than 24 hours following a homicide on Tuesday, on the 800 block of Old Oyster Point Road, the Newport News Police Department (NNPD) has made an arrest.
Derek Eugene Williams, a 38-year-old resident of Newport News, was arrested on charges of second-degree murder, shooting from a vehicle, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
The victim, Aaron West, was killed in the early hours of Tuesday. The rapid arrest was made possible by utilizing technology and civic involvement, according to NNPD Chief Steve Drew.
Williams was taken into custody on Tuesday. The investigation into the incident is ongoing as detectives continue to gather evidence.
The NNPD has asked anyone with information relating to the case to contact them.
