QUEENS, NY – Stephen Giraldo, a 36-year-old resident of 144th Street in Jamaica, pleaded guilty to attempted murder on Tuesday. The Queens District Attorney’s office announced that Giraldo will be sentenced to 25 years in prison on October 6 by Queens Supreme Court Justice Michael Yavinsky. The charges stem from an incident on December 27, 2022, at approximately 5:20 a.m.
According to the charges, Giraldo was outside the residence of his estranged wife, 41-year-old Sophia Giraldo, in a white Ford Explorer. After moving a trash bag that was blocking the vehicle, he intentionally drove the SUV into Sophia, who had just walked out of her residence. The couple’s three children, ages 11, 9, and 6, were in the car at the time.
After the collision, Giraldo exited the vehicle and stabbed his wife with a knife. Sophia Giraldo suffered severe neurological damage, broken bones in her leg, and a stab wound that punctured her liver. She remains under medical care and has not regained consciousness since the attack.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Audra Beerman, Deputy Bureau Chief of the District Attorney’s Domestic Violence Bureau. The prosecution is under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Mary Kate Quinn, Bureau Chief, and Executive Assistant District Attorney for the Special Prosecutions Division Joyce Smith.
