Police-Involved Shooting in Washington Heights After Car Accident

NEW YORK CITY, NY – A shooting unfolded in Washington Heights on Thursday morning, following a car accident near Henry Hudson Parkway.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) reported that a 19-year-old suspect was shot and subsequently hospitalized after an altercation with police officers.

The incident began around 3 a.m. with multiple 911 calls about a car accident at 177th Street and Haven Avenue, disrupting traffic to the George Washington Bridge. Upon arrival, officers encountered a man and a woman in a stolen black car. The man, wearing a mask and armed with a gun, allegedly confronted the officers.

Eyewitness Richard Roger described hearing shots and witnessing the situation from his apartment. The NYPD confirmed that eight shots were fired, with at least two hitting the suspect in the chest. No officers were injured.

Inside the vehicle, a note was found indicating the suspect’s intention for suicide and an apology to the officers for his actions.

The suspect remains under arrest in the hospital, with charges pending. The NYPD continues its investigation and asks to the public for any relevant information. Tips can be submitted through various NYPD channels.
