Walmart Employee Shot by Shoplifter

PINEVILLE, N.C. – A Walmart Neighborhood Market employee was shot during an altercation over a shoplifting attempt at the Pineville store.

The incident occurred just before 6:30 p.m. on Pineville-Matthews Road near Kettering Drive.

Jonathan Alan Smith, 32, was confronted by the employee for not scanning a chicken item at the self-checkout.

After a scuffle, Smith left and later returned with a firearm. During a subsequent altercation, the gun discharged, resulting in an employee being shot in the leg.

The victim, whose identity is undisclosed, is not in serious condition. Smith has been apprehended and charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and misdemeanor larceny.
