New Jersey Proposes Laws to Regulate Hair Washing

by Jessica Woods

TRENTON, NJ – A bill under consideration in New Jersey seeks to introduce a regulatory framework for individuals aspiring to become shampoo technicians without pursuing a professional license from the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling. The proposed legislation mandates a 40-hour training program at either a licensed school or through a licensed shop’s program, followed by a practical examination to qualify as a shampoo technician.

The bill aims to standardize the qualifications and training for shampoo technicians, ensuring quality and safety in cosmetology services.

It requires successful completion of the training program and practical examination, after which the board will issue a certification to the individual. This certification is subject to biennial renewal, with specific procedures outlined for reactivation after lapses in certification. Furthermore, the board is tasked with establishing comprehensive regulations, including qualifications, authorized trainers, examination standards, and fee structures, to effectively implement the bill’s objectives.
