Delaware State Police have apprehended a 17-year-old male from Townsend, Delaware, for the theft of a Ford Explorer from a residence in Smyrna. On a recent early Tuesday morning, troopers were dispatched to a home on the 5500 block of Dupont Parkway in Smyrna following a report of a stolen vehicle.
The victim’s 2020 gray Ford Explorer was taken from her driveway by an unidentified individual. Investigations revealed that the suspect had attempted to break into several vehicles along Dupont Parkway before successfully stealing the victim’s unlocked Ford. The stolen vehicle was later recovered abandoned on the shoulder of Red Hill Road in Maryland, after a deputy from the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office located it.
The incident, which unfolded earlier this month, resulted in the Troop 3 Property Crimes Detectives identifying the 17-year-old as the primary suspect behind the vehicle theft. Subsequently, an arrest warrant was issued for the teenager. On Friday, the 17-year-old voluntarily surrendered himself at Troop 9 in connection to the case.
Following his surrender, he was accused of the felony of Theft of a Motor Vehicle. The suspect was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and was granted release on a $2,000 unsecured bond.
