JERSEY CITY, NJ – Darius Evans, 49, has been sentenced to 16 years in New Jersey State Prison for the fatal stabbing of Tyrone Haskins on January 1, 2021. The Honorable John A. Young issued the sentence on Thursday.
Evans, a resident of Jersey City, entered a guilty plea to one count of Aggravated Manslaughter on May 21. According to N.J.S.A. 2C:11-4, he must serve 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole. Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Daniel Gilbert represented the state during the sentencing.
The incident occurred in the early hours of January 1, 2021. At approximately 2:45 a.m., Jersey City Police officers responded to a report of a possible stabbing near 333 Ocean Avenue. Upon arrival, they found Haskins, 39, with a stab wound to the torso.
Haskins was transported to Jersey City Medical Center by Emergency Medical Services. He was pronounced dead at approximately 3:20 a.m.
