82-Year-Old Dead in Two-Vehicle Collision, Woman and Infant Injured

Newark, DE – Delaware State Police are currently investigating a fatal crash involving two vehicles in Newark on Thursday evening.

At approximately 7:11 p.m., a Toyota Avalon, traveling southbound in the left turn lane on Paper Mill Road, was attempting to turn left at the Polly Drummond Hill Road intersection. Concurrently, a Nissan Rogue, traveling northbound on Paper Mill Road, entered the intersection and struck the Toyota. The force of the collision caused the Nissan to overturn and hit a traffic signal pole.

The driver of the Toyota, an 82-year-old Newark resident, was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

The Nissan’s driver, a 25-year-old woman from Newark, and a 3-year-old child were taken to the hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The incident led to a six-hour roadway closure as police carried out their investigation.

The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit is still examining the crash. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Master Corporal R. Kunicki at (302) 660-4267.
