CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. — A routine morning turned extraordinary for an Anne Arundel County man who won the $50,000 top prize playing the Maryland Lottery’s $50,000 Cash scratch-off game earlier this week.

The retired mechanical engineer, who chose to remain anonymous, said he has been playing the $20 scratch-off for weeks with modest success. But this time, after scratching off his ticket at home, he was stunned to see a match that delivered the game’s top prize. “I was sure that I must be reading it wrong,” he told Lottery officials.

Overwhelmed by the discovery, the winner called a nearby family member to share the news. After a moment of suspense, he quickly reassured them with the announcement of his unexpected windfall.

The loyal player plans to deposit his $50,000 winnings into the bank, remarking, “Retirement costs money, you know.” For now, he said he might stick with the $50,000 Cash game, which still has 68 top prizes remaining, according to Lottery officials.

The winning ticket was purchased at Twin Beach Convenient Mart on Bayside Road in Chesapeake Beach. The store received a $500 bonus for selling the top-prize ticket.
