Illegal Migrant Sentenced to Prison for Trafficking Meth and Cocaine in U.S.

BATON ROUGE, La. — A Honduran national was sentenced to 63 months in federal prison after being convicted of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and cocaine, according to U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Gathe, Jr.

Marvin Martinez-Ruiz, 42, was arrested on August 21, 2023, after East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputies conducted a traffic stop on his van for improper lane use. During a search of the vehicle, law enforcement found 416.1 grams of methamphetamine, 150.9 grams of cocaine, and two digital scales. Martinez-Ruiz admitted ownership of the narcotics after being read his Miranda rights.

U.S. District Judge Brian A. Jackson sentenced Martinez-Ruiz to five years and three months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. The case underscores efforts by law enforcement to target drug trafficking in the Baton Rouge area.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office emphasized that Martinez-Ruiz’s conviction reflects a continued commitment to combating drug-related crimes.
