Man arrested for assault, burglary at Buffalo school, police say

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A man was arrested Tuesday in connection with a burglary and assault at PS 59, the Dr. Charles R. Drew Science Magnet School, according to the Buffalo Police Department.

Officers responded to an assault-in-progress call at approximately 12:30 p.m. at the school on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. Police learned that an unidentified man had entered the building through the Buffalo Museum of Science and approached a young student. The school’s assistant principal intervened, at which point the suspect allegedly punched the administrator and shoved them into a wall, causing minor injuries. The suspect then fled into the museum, where officers located and arrested him without incident.

Detectives from the Threat Management Unit obtained a Temporary Extreme Risk Protection Order against the suspect, identified as Shane Cronin, 30, of Lombard, Illinois.

Cronin has been charged with second-degree burglary, a class C felony; third-degree assault, a class A misdemeanor; endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor; and second-degree harassment, a violation.

Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive for the incident.
