HACKENSACK, N.J. — A Hackensack woman has been arrested and charged with theft after authorities say she transferred more than $451,000 from her employer’s business account to her personal bank account.
Elena Currie, 64, was taken into custody on Thursday in Paramus following an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced. Officials began investigating in April 2024 after being alerted to the alleged theft.
Detectives determined that between July 2021 and November 2023, Currie conducted 398 unauthorized Zelle transfers from the company’s bank account, prosecutors said.
Currie was charged with one count of second-degree theft and released pending her first court appearance in Bergen County Superior Court. Prosecutor Musella emphasized that charges are accusations, and Currie is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Authorities say the case highlights ongoing efforts to combat financial crimes in Bergen County.
