Historic $348m jackpot won on mega millions ticket sold in burgess

BURGESS, VA — A Mega Millions ticket sold in Northumberland County has matched all six numbers in the June 27 drawing, winning an estimated $348 million jackpot — the largest lottery prize ever won in Virginia.

The ticket was purchased at E & C Mid-Atlantic in Burgess. Virginia Lottery officials confirmed the historic win, noting that the winner has yet to come forward. Whoever holds the ticket has 180 days from the drawing date to claim the prize, with the choice of receiving the full amount in 30 annual payments or taking a one-time cash option estimated at $155.5 million before taxes.

Virginia Lottery officials presented E & C Mid-Atlantic with a $50,000 bonus check for selling the winning ticket, a standard payout for retailers who sell tickets worth $5 million or more.

The $348 million prize marks the 10th Mega Millions jackpot won in Virginia since the game began in 2002. Mega Millions drawings are held Tuesday and Friday nights, with odds of winning the jackpot at 1 in 290,472,336.

In Fiscal Year 2024, the Virginia Lottery generated more than $934 million for K-12 public education, accounting for about 10 percent of the state’s school funding.
