Man killed and another wounded in early morning Baltimore shooting tied to Russell Street
BALTIMORE, MD – Gunfire broke out in South Baltimore just after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, leaving one man dead and another injured after what authorities believe was a targeted shooting near the 1500 block of Russell Street.
Officers patrolling near the 700 block of Washington Boulevard heard gunshots around 1:33 a.m., followed moments later by a ShotSpotter alert registering gunfire in the 800 block of West Cross Street. Police responded quickly and found a 26-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but died despite emergency treatment.
Shortly after officers secured the scene, a second victim — a 22-year-old man — arrived at a local hospital with gunshot wounds that were determined to be non-life-threatening. His condition is currently listed as stable.
Preliminary findings from investigators indicate the shooting occurred in the 1500 block of Russell Street. Police believe both men were injured in the same incident.
Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation. Officials have not released the identity of the deceased pending notification of family, and no suspects have been named at this time.
The shooting adds to a string of overnight violence in Baltimore, where citywide efforts continue to curb gun-related crime.
