Texas trucker scores $2 million scratch off win during Maryland stop
Hagerstown, Maryland – A Texas truck driver making a routine stop in Hagerstown left Maryland $2 million richer after a spontaneous scratch off purchase turned into the first top prize claimed in the Ace of Spades instant game.
The long-haul driver claimed his $2 million prize Tuesday, Feb. 18, at Maryland Lottery headquarters. He said he was visiting friends in Washington County and decided to buy a ticket before heading back on the road.
The Texas native told lottery officials he regularly purchases tickets in states where his work takes him. The winning ticket, however, was not part of a plan.
He said he was grocery shopping at Martin’s at 1729 Dual Highway in Hagerstown when he noticed a lottery vending machine and selected a $30 Ace of Spades scratch off ticket.
After returning to his vehicle, he began scratching the ticket and uncovered a $400 match on the first number. Additional matches followed, including a $5,000 prize and multiple $400 amounts. Every number on the ticket matched a prize amount.
When he revealed the multiplier, it showed 200X. The combined matches and multiplier resulted in the game’s $2 million top prize.
Ace of Spades debuted in September with three $2 million top prizes. This marks the first top prize claimed in the game. Two $2 million prizes and two $50,000 second-tier prizes remain unclaimed.
The winner told lottery officials he plans to share the winnings with his family.
Martin’s grocery store will receive a $2,000 bonus for selling the top-prize-winning ticket.
