Fake warrant scam nets $200K as suspect arrested in New York probe

Bainbridge, NY — A scam involving threats of arrest and demands for cash led to a loss of more than $200,000, with state police now warning others after making an arrest in the case.

Investigators said the victim was contacted by phone and falsely told there was a warrant for their arrest. The caller demanded large cash withdrawals to avoid being taken into custody.

Authorities identified the suspect as Tushar Sharma, 23, of India, who was residing in Arcadia, California at the time of the investigation. He was arrested by New York State Police following an inquiry into the scheme.

Police believe there may be additional victims who had contact with Sharma.
