A stop at a Newport News convenience store after work turned into a six-figure lottery win for a Hampton resident.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A Hampton man is celebrating a $100,000 Virginia Lottery prize after purchasing a winning scratch-off ticket following his work shift.

William White said he stopped at H & H Market, located at 3503 Madison Avenue in Newport News, and bought a ticket from the Virginia Lottery’s 5 Times Lucky game.

After scratching the ticket, White called over friends who were with him at the store to confirm what he was seeing.

The ticket turned out to be the game’s top prize winner worth $100,000.

White told lottery officials he plans to use the money to pay bills and take a vacation.

The Virginia Lottery said White’s win marks the first top prize claimed in the 5 Times Lucky scratch-off game. Two top prizes of $100,000 remain unclaimed.

Lottery officials said the odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 1,020,000, while the odds of winning any prize in the game are 1 in 4.16.

Virginia Lottery proceeds support K-12 education across the Commonwealth. Hampton City, where White lives, received more than $24.7 million in lottery funding for local schools during the last fiscal year. Statewide, the lottery generated more than $901 million for K-12 education in Fiscal Year 2025.
