BRONX, NY – A former NYC Department of Correction officer, a Rikers Island inmate, and a Bronx civilian have been recently indicted for smuggling a cellphone into the Rikers Island jail.

Bennie Green, 36, of Yonkers, formerly a Correction Officer, along with Barry Wells, 35, a Rikers Island inmate, and Starquiasha Singletary, 32, of the Bronx, face charges related to bribery and promoting prison contraband.

According to the New York City Department of Investigation, Green allegedly took a $2,500 bribe to sneak an iPhone to inmate Wells.

This occurred after Wells instructed Singletary to purchase the phone. Surveillance videos and phone records link Green to the exchange on August 4, 2021. Green and Singletary were arraigned on September 14, while Wells will be arraigned at a later date.
