GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, NJ – A significant cockfighting ring has been uncovered and shut down by the Galloway Township Police Department’s Humane Law Enforcement Officer (HLEO) Unit. The bust occurred on Saturday in the 300 block of S. Bremen Avenue, following a meticulously executed search warrant linked to an extensive investigation.
Upon arrival, officers were met with attempts to flee by numerous individuals present at the scene. A thorough search revealed a sophisticated cockfighting setup, complete with an arena, spectator seating, and various fighting “kits.” The operation housed approximately 50 roosters in conditions ranging from crates to storage boxes, all showing signs of distress and injury consistent with fighting.
The operation’s scale led to the arrest of 51 individuals and the confiscation of over $37,000 in cash. Consultations with the NJ Department of Agriculture resulted in the humane relocation of the recovered roosters. Additionally, four dogs, three of which were found in dire conditions, were rescued from the premises.
Jose Madera, identified as the homeowner, faces several charges including animal cruelty, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, destruction of evidence, and resisting arrest. Madera has been remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility, awaiting further legal proceedings.
