BRONX, NY – Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark and New York City Department of Investigation Commissioner Jocelyn E. Strauber have announced the indictment of a New York City Department of Correction officer. The officer is charged with receiving bribes and promoting prison contraband by smuggling banned items, including cigarettes and marijuana, into the Bronx Hall of Justice.
District Attorney Clark emphasized the severity of the crime, stating that the officer allegedly accepted a $500 bribe to deliver contraband to an inmate. This act not only breached security but also contributed to ongoing violence and corruption within the jails. The shocking incident took place inside the courthouse, highlighting the audacious nature of the crime.
Commissioner Strauber remarked on the responsibilities of correction officers to ensure safety and order within jails. The indicted officer, however, is accused of severely undermining these duties by facilitating the smuggling of contraband.
This act compromised the security of both the courthouse and Rikers Island.
NYC Department of Correction Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie also commented on the risks such actions pose to both staff and inmates. She expressed gratitude towards the Department of Investigation and the Bronx District Attorney’s office for their efforts in prosecuting those who endanger jail security.
