DC crook caught using stolen cards minutes after home invasion

WASHINGTON, DC — A man crept into a Northeast DC residence while someone was still inside, stole the victim’s bank cards, and then hit local businesses trying to spend them — and now police are asking for help identifying him.

The burglary happened around 8:28 p.m. Sunday in the 600 block of 8th Street NE. The suspect entered the home, stole personal property including financial cards, and fled before the resident realized what had happened. Moments later, the suspect tried to use the stolen cards at several nearby locations.

Investigators said the suspect was caught on surveillance video shortly after the burglary and are now circulating the image publicly in hopes of finding someone who recognizes him.

The break-in is being investigated as both a burglary and financial fraud case. Police have not said whether there was forced entry or if the suspect encountered anyone inside the home. The victim was not injured.

The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Tipsters are urged to contact MPD via phone or text but are advised not to approach the individual.
