DC man slain steps from home into deadly gunfire

Deadly shooting on 3rd Street leaves Southeast man dead as reward offered

WASHINGTON, DC – A 40-year-old man was found shot to death on a Southeast block late Saturday night, setting off a homicide investigation and a reward offer as officials seek information about who pulled the trigger.

Officers were called to the 4400 block of 3rd Street Southeast at 11:09 p.m. Saturday after reports of a shooting in the area. When they arrived, they located a man suffering from gunshot wounds.

DC Fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene and attempted lifesaving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the location.

The victim was identified as Travis Fears, 40, of Southeast, D.C.

The shooting unfolded in the city’s Seventh District, adding to the number of homicide investigations underway in the area. No information about a suspect or possible motive was released Sunday.

Investigators are working to determine what led to the gunfire and whether the shooting was targeted or random. The scene on 3rd Street Southeast was secured as evidence was collected and canvassing took place.

Officials are asking anyone with knowledge of the incident to call police at (202) 727-9099 or text tips to 50411. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for homicides committed in the District of Columbia.

The investigation remains active.
