WASHINGTON, D.C. – Nearly two decades after a Thanksgiving Day tragedy, a suspect has been arrested in the 2005 killing of 23-year-old Makia Mosby in Southeast Washington, police announced Friday.
On November 24, 2005, emergency responders were called to an apartment in the 1200 block of Valley Avenue, Southeast, for a structure fire around 9:00 p.m. Inside, they discovered Mosby, who had suffered burns and apparent gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later ruled her death a homicide.
After years of investigation, detectives from the MPD’s Major Case Squad identified a suspect, 53-year-old Michael Wells of Southeast, D.C. On Thursday, December 12, 2024, the United States Marshal Service located and arrested Wells pursuant to a DC Superior Court bench warrant. He was transported to the Homicide Branch and charged with First Degree Murder.
The arrest brings renewed attention to a case that remained unsolved for 19 years.
