MILLINGTON, MD — A woman was hospitalized after a camper trailer fire broke out Thursday afternoon in Queen Anne’s County, authorities said. The blaze, which erupted at 2:18 p.m. inside a Sunline Solaris camper located at 113 Dogwood Court, caused an estimated $10,000 in damages.

Key Points

  • Woman rescued after fire breaks out in camper trailer in Millington
  • Victim alerted by her dog, escaped with minor injuries and some pets
  • Two cats remain missing after fire guts trailer’s interior

Trailer engulfed, occupant escapes

According to investigators, the fire began in the interior of the trailer and was caused by an accidental electrical failure. The occupant, identified as Dawn Reed, was asleep when the fire started but was awakened by one of her pet dogs. She attempted to extinguish the flames but was unsuccessful.

Despite the intense heat and smoke, Reed managed to escape the trailer with some of her pets. However, two of her cats remain unaccounted for following the incident. Reed was transported to the University of Maryland Medical Center at Chestertown with non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the escape.

Emergency response and fire control

Forty firefighters from the Crumpton Volunteer Fire Department responded to the single-alarm incident and managed to bring the fire under control within 15 minutes. No smoke alarms or fire suppression systems were present inside the trailer at the time of the fire.

The trailer, along with its contents, was declared a total loss. “The occupant attempted to extinguish the fire with negative results,” authorities confirmed in their report.

Red Cross assistance and ongoing concerns

Reed is currently receiving support from family members and the American Red Cross. Fire officials emphasized that the fire was accidental and no arrests have been made. The investigation remains focused on electrical failure as the primary cause.

The loss of pets and property continues to be a concern as emergency responders attempt to locate the missing animals and provide resources to the displaced resident.
