Felony charges after woman attacks and threatens in DC lobby

Woman arrested after racially charged assault in Northwest DC apartment lobby

WASHINGTON, DC — A woman is facing felony charges after police say she assaulted a person and hurled racial slurs inside the lobby of a Corcoran Street apartment building over the weekend in Northwest.

The incident happened around 7:18 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, when the suspect allegedly approached multiple individuals in the lobby of a residential building in the 1300 block of Corcoran Street NW. According to police, she physically assaulted one victim and made racially derogatory statements toward the group.

Responding officers quickly arrived at the scene and took the suspect into custody. The suspect was identified as 38-year-old Sharon Brown of Northeast, D.C. She has been charged with Felony Threats and Simple Assault.

The Metropolitan Police Department said the case is being investigated as potentially motivated by hate or bias. However, officials noted that the hate crime designation is subject to change based on the outcome of the investigation, and it does not necessarily reflect how prosecutors will charge the case.

No serious injuries were reported.
