Florida woman cashes in $1M scratch off win with $640K payout

Tallahassee, FL – A Jefferson County woman turned a single scratch-off ticket into a $1 million prize, opting to walk away with a $640,000 lump sum after claiming her winnings at Florida Lottery headquarters.

Brenda Larry of Monticello claimed the prize from the 500X THE CASH Scratch-Off game on January 23, according to the Florida Lottery.

Lottery officials said Larry purchased the winning $50 ticket at Pit Stop on North Jefferson Street in Monticello.

Instead of receiving annual payments, Larry chose a one-time lump sum totaling $640,000. The original prize carried a $1 million value before the cash option.

The 500X THE CASH game features a top prize of $25 million and offers overall odds of 1 in 4.23 to win any prize. The game has more than $1.66 billion in total cash prizes available.

Scratch-off games account for a significant share of Florida Lottery sales, making up about 74 percent of ticket purchases in the 2024-2025 fiscal year. Since the Lottery began, scratch-off games have awarded more than $70.8 billion in prizes and created thousands of millionaires statewide.

The Florida Lottery reports that it has contributed more than $50 billion to education, including funding for the Bright Futures Scholarship Program, which supports students attending colleges and technical schools across the state.
