Gas station stop explodes into $100K payday

Baltimore scratch off regular screams after quick play turns into $100K shock

PARKVILLE, MD – A Baltimore woman who calls herself scratch-off royalty rushed through a ticket inside a Parkville gas station and walked out $100,000 richer after a quick scan revealed a top-prize win.

The self-described Maryland Lottery scratch-off queen claimed her $100,000 prize Sunday, Feb. 23, after playing the $10 Red 5’s Doubler game.

She purchased the winning ticket at Carroll Motor Fuels, 2535 Cleanleigh Drive in Parkville. In a hurry because her husband was waiting outside, she skipped her usual method of slowly scratching the entire ticket and instead revealed only the prize area before scanning it at the store’s vending machine.

The screen displayed a message instructing her to take the ticket to the Lottery. Unsure what it meant, she showed the ticket to a store clerk, who confirmed it was a top-prize winner. The two reacted inside the store as the realization set in.

Her husband said he was skeptical when she returned to the car announcing the win but later confirmed the ticket’s value.

The winner, a retired government employee who now works part-time as a contractor, said the prize is prompting her to reconsider her work schedule. She plans to pay bills, take a trip to Florida, Aruba or Jamaica and deposit the remaining funds.

The Parkville retailer will receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the $100,000 winning ticket.

Red 5’s Doubler launched Dec. 5 with nine $100,000 top prizes. Following this claim, five top prizes remain. The game also still has six of 11 original $20,000 prizes and 17 $10,000 prizes unclaimed.
