Inmate killed in fatal prison fight at Jessup Correctional Institute

Jessup, MD — A 33-year-old inmate died inside the Jessup Correctional Institute on Monday night following a violent altercation with another prisoner, according to Maryland State Police.

Joseph Harrell was pronounced dead at the scene after a confrontation erupted in front of the prison library around 7:30 p.m. Medical staff responded immediately but were unable to revive him. The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services alerted state police shortly after the incident.

Harrell was serving time at the maximum-security facility when the fight occurred. State police have not disclosed what sparked the altercation or if any weapons were used. The identity of the other inmate involved is being withheld until formal charges are filed.

Troopers from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit and forensic technicians processed the scene Monday night, collecting evidence as part of their ongoing investigation.

Once complete, the case will be presented to the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office for potential prosecution. Officials have not confirmed whether the suspect will face murder or manslaughter charges.

Jessup Correctional Institute, known for housing some of Maryland’s most dangerous offenders, has dealt with violence behind bars in previous years. Harrell’s death marks the latest in a series of fatal incidents within the state’s prison system.
