Teen charged in drive by shooting near Albemarle High School

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA – A 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting near Albemarle High School that left one person wounded and sent investigators combing the area for evidence.

The shooting occurred Friday, January 16, at approximately 10:23 p.m., when officers were dispatched to UVA Health for a gunshot victim who arrived in non-life-threatening condition.

After speaking with witnesses, investigators determined the victim had been shot about 30 minutes earlier while driving through the area of Hydraulic Road and Lambs Road, near Albemarle High School. Officers responding to the scene recovered shell casings.

Following an investigation, Albemarle County Police arrested a 17-year-old male on Monday, February 23.

The juvenile has been charged with three felony offenses: use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, malicious wounding, and shooting within 1,000 feet of a school. He is being held at the Blue Ridge Juvenile Detention Center.

The investigation remains ongoing.
