Latest forecast calls for 3 to 5 inches of snow across New Jersey

Trenton, NJ – A fast-moving winter storm is expected to blanket much of central and southern New Jersey in snow overnight, with totals reaching up to five inches by Sunday morning.

Forecasters warn that snowfall could be heavy at times before midnight as temperatures drop into the mid-20s.

By daybreak, the storm is expected to taper off from west to east, leaving behind slick roads and dangerous travel conditions.

Winter weather advisory in effect
The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for large portions of central and southern New Jersey, Delaware, and southeastern Pennsylvania until 1 p.m. Sunday. Between 2 and 4 inches of snow are expected across most areas, with localized totals nearing 5 inches under heavier bands. Winds will remain light tonight, but gusts could reach 20 mph Sunday morning as the system pulls away and colder air moves in.

Drivers are urged to reduce speed and use extra caution overnight as untreated roads become snow-covered and icy. The advisory also warns of slippery sidewalks and steps for anyone heading outdoors early Sunday.

Storm timing and conditions
Snow will begin as a rain-and-snow mix this evening before changing to all snow after midnight. Heavier bursts are likely through the early morning hours, reducing visibility for drivers. Accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are possible by sunrise, with another 1 to 2 inches before precipitation ends mid-morning.

By Sunday afternoon, skies will gradually clear with highs near 32 degrees. Winds from the northwest at 10 mph, gusting to 20 mph, will make for a cold and breezy day across the region. Temperatures are expected to plummet Sunday night, with lows around 15 degrees.

Cold week ahead
The brief clearing Sunday will give way to increasing clouds Monday, with highs near 30 degrees. No additional snow is forecast at this time, but forecasters say the cold pattern will persist into the start of the week.
