Moped thief busted after off-duty cop watches bold carjacking
WASHINGTON, DC – A 34-year-old man was quickly arrested Wednesday night after he allegedly carjacked a moped in Northeast Washington in front of an off-duty police officer — only to be chased down and caught moments later by on-duty units.
The incident unfolded around 9:44 p.m. in the 1000 block of Brentwood Road NE, where the suspect, identified as Terel Rivers Antwoin, forcibly removed a man from his moped and sped away. An off-duty member of the Metropolitan Police Department witnessed the entire incident and immediately alerted Fifth District officers, sharing a description and the direction the suspect fled.
Responding officers saturated the area and spotted the suspect riding the stolen moped in the 900 block of 17th Street NE. A traffic stop was initiated and Antwoin was taken into custody without further incident. The moped was recovered and returned to the victim.
Antwoin, who has no fixed address, was charged with Unarmed Carjacking, Reckless Driving, and No Permit. Further investigation revealed he was also wanted on three DC Superior Court warrants for Lewd, Indecent, or Obscene Acts, as well as two out-of-jurisdiction warrants from Prince George’s County, Maryland, and Alexandria, Virginia. He now faces two counts of Fugitive from Justice in addition to the new charges.
