Howard County man stunned by $50K lottery win after routine ticket check
Columbia, MD — A routine weekly habit turned into a moment of surprise for a Howard County man who discovered he had won a $50,000 top prize while checking a stack of lottery tickets.
The Columbia resident, who said he regularly plays Bonus Match 5, purchased the winning ticket during a stop at Market Lot Liquors on West Church Street in Hagerstown while traveling for work.
He placed the ticket in his wallet and did not check it until days later, when he visited a retailer to scan multiple tickets as part of his usual routine.
While expecting a smaller prize, the scanner revealed a $50,000 win, prompting a brief reaction before he composed himself in the store.
The winner claimed the prize April 29 at Maryland Lottery headquarters.
Lottery officials said the retailer will receive a $500 bonus for selling the top-prize-winning ticket.
Bonus Match 5 drawings are held regularly, offering players chances at top-tier prizes.
