Maryland man takes two days to believe $50K lottery win

Maryland electrician stuns himself with $50K scratch-off win after double-checking for two days

GREENBELT, MD – A Greenbelt electrician needed a second opinion—and a full two days—before accepting that the Gold Bar Bingo ticket he bought was actually worth $50,000.

The Prince George’s County resident, who plays scratch-offs several times a week, walked into Maryland Lottery headquarters on Tuesday to claim the top prize from the $5 Gold Bar Bingo game. He purchased the winning ticket at the Centerway Mini Mart in Greenbelt but held onto it for two days, unable to believe the prize was real.

The winner, who chose to remain anonymous, said he’s long favored extended-play scratch games like Bingo and Crossword because they take more time to play. “It just sort of feels like you’re working for whatever you win,” he said.

His hesitation came from past experiences—twice before, he had mistakenly believed he’d won big, only to misread the game rules. This time, he made sure. Once the ticket was verified at a lottery retailer, there was no denying the top prize.

Gold Bar Bingo launched in July and still has three unclaimed top prizes of $50,000 remaining, along with five $10,000 second-tier prizes. The ticket was bought at Centerway Mini Mart, located at 109 Centerway in the Roosevelt Center. The store will receive a $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
