Maryland Police Say Viral Story About Woman Calling ICE on Roofers After Job Was Done is False

Authorities say online reports of a homeowner calling immigration agents to avoid paying workers are inaccurate as tensions grow around a Maryland property.

Cambridge, MD – Police in Cambridge are responding to widespread social media claims involving immigration enforcement and a roofing job, saying key details circulating online are incorrect as they increase patrols near the property. Now, police are mobilizing to protect the tenants of that home from online threats of violence against the woman on social media.

The Cambridge Police Department said officers were alerted Thursday to reports alleging a homeowner in the 700 block of Bayly Road hired a roofing company, allowed most of the work to be completed, and then contacted Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to avoid payment .

When officers responded to the address on March 26, they found a different roofing company actively working on the home with a valid permit issued the day prior.

Police dispute viral claims about roofing job

Investigators said the new contractor reported that only about 15% of the old roof had been removed when they arrived, contradicting online claims that 90% of the work had already been completed .

Police also spoke with a tenant at the residence, who stated she did not hire the roofing company and did not contact ICE, according to the department.
