Maryland retiree hits 000 Powerball win after billion dollar jackpot temptation

Bowie, MD – A retired postal worker from Prince George’s County walked away with a $50,000 prize after a spur-of-the-moment decision to play Powerball while chasing the nation’s latest billion-dollar jackpot. The Bowie resident, a longtime fan of Maryland Lottery’s Multi-Match game, said curiosity about the growing Powerball prize convinced him to add one more ticket to his usual routine.

He purchased the winning ticket on Dec. 15 at the 7-Eleven located at 6860 Race Track Road in Bowie. The next day, while scanning his tickets, the retiree said he was stunned to see the $50,000 win flash across the screen. “When I saw the $50,000, I yelled,” he recalled, laughing about how lucky it was that the store wasn’t crowded.

The Maryland Lottery reported that the man claimed his prize on Dec. 22 at its Baltimore headquarters. While he’s previously enjoyed a few notable wins through Multi-Match, he admitted this one might change his future play habits. “That $1 billion jackpot was on my mind,” he said, noting that his small experiment with Powerball paid off in a big way.

The 7-Eleven retailer will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
