Delaware State Police say a 66-year-old Maryland woman died after her electric bicycle entered the travel lanes of Coastal Highway and was struck by a pickup truck.
REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. — Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal e-bike crash that claimed the life of a Maryland woman Saturday morning along Coastal Highway in Rehoboth Beach.
The collision occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. on June 20 on southbound Coastal Highway north of Savages Ditch Road, according to investigators.
Police said a GMC Sierra 2500 was traveling southbound in the left lane while a woman was riding an electric bicycle in the designated bicycle lane along the highway.
E-bike entered travel lanes
According to the preliminary investigation, the e-bike rider left the bicycle lane and entered the southbound travel lanes for reasons that remain under investigation.
Troopers said the rider moved into the path of the GMC pickup truck, resulting in a collision.
The impact threw the rider from the e-bike and caused fatal injuries.
Victim dies at hospital
The rider, identified only as a 66-year-old woman from Potomac, Maryland, was transported to a local hospital following the crash.
She was later pronounced dead.
Authorities are withholding her name until family members have been notified.
Investigation continues
The driver of the GMC, a 64-year-old man from Perryville, Maryland, was not injured in the crash.
The roadway remained closed for approximately two hours while investigators documented the scene and cleared the area.
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
