Milk run turns into $50K Powerball payday in Maryland

Grocery run turns into $50,000 Powerball win for Maryland couple

Hagerstown, MD — A routine grocery trip in Washington County took an unexpected turn when a stop at a lottery machine during a shopping run led to a $50,000 Powerball prize.

The couple was shopping together on April 20 when the husband briefly stepped away from their list to purchase a ticket at a vending machine inside Martin’s grocery store at 1729 Dual Highway. The ticket later proved to be a third-prize winner in the Powerball drawing.

Two days after the purchase, the husband scanned the ticket at another lottery retailer and discovered the $50,000 prize. He said he initially rechecked the ticket multiple times before confirming the win.

The winner, a retired medical specialist, said he regularly plays lottery games, with Powerball and Mega Millions among his preferred choices. He previously won $15,000 on a scratch-off ticket but did not expect another large payout.

The couple claimed the prize April 22 at Maryland Lottery headquarters. They plan to share the winnings with family members.

The Maryland Lottery continues to report winning tickets across the state, with retailer locations disclosed following prize validation.
